Oscar 2025: Laapataa Ladies Writer Hopes “All We Imagine As Light” Makes It to Independent Category Amid Selection Committee Controversy
India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025, Laapataa Ladies’ selection, has received a positive response from both Indians and abroad. However, criticism arose due to the absence of women on the panel that chose Kiran Rao’s film for the 97th Academy Awards. The film’s writer, Sneha Desai, has addressed this criticism and chosen to focus on the positive aspects.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Sneha acknowledged the mixed reviews of the announcement, stating, “Most people criticize the committee, everyone has their personal favorites. However, the overall reaction from people has been warm and affectionate, creating wonderful momentum.”
The film, led by newcomers like Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta, and Nitanshi Goel, surpassed other acclaimed movies to secure its place. Amidst celebrations, online discussions arose suggesting that Payal Kapadia’s film, All We Imagine As Light, with its recent success at Cannes, could have been a stronger contender.

Regarding this, Sneha commented, “Perhaps we could have had two strong entries from India. Hopefully, there could be an independent entry. I would be happy to support them just as I support our film.” Laapataa Ladies also featured Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, Geeta Agrawal Sharma, and Satendra Soni in key roles.
The critically acclaimed movie, backed by Aamir Khan Productions (AKP), aims to follow the successful path of their 2001 film Lagaan, with extensive promotions and campaigning. “Now, it’s up to the production team to decide the next steps. AKP is well-equipped to handle this, given their experience with Lagaan,” Sneha added.
Sneha Desai is pleased that both audiences and selection panels have appreciated the simplicity and depth of a film like Laapataa Ladies, in an industry accustomed to complex narratives.
