Orlando Bloom Shares That Katy Perry Was Moved to Need a Drink After Watching His New Film The Cut
Orlando Bloom put a lot of effort into his new movie The Cut, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5. His hard work paid off when he impressed his fiancée, Katy Perry.
Speaking to People on September 6, Bloom revealed that after watching the film, Perry asked for a “stiff drink.”
At 47, Bloom plays an unnamed boxer in the film who must lose weight to make a comeback in the ring. The official synopsis describes his character as a “retired fighter” who will risk his life to compete again.
“I was very hangry,” Bloom said he was prepared for the film. He had a nutritionist who put him on a strict diet of tuna and cucumber for three weeks before filming started. The goal was to start Bloom at his lightest weight and then show him putting on weight as the film progresses.
Perry, 39, cried when she saw the premiere of the drama. Bloom said she was really moved as she knew what it took. At one point during filming, Bloom thought he would die when he came home to his family.
Bloom and Perry have a daughter, Daisy Dove, born in 2020. Bloom also has a son named Flynn Christopher Blanchard Copeland with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr. “She was there throughout, with the kids and stuff,” Bloom said of the singer.
Actress Catriona Balfe, known for Outlander, plays Bloom’s on-screen wife and trainer. She agreed with him that it’s easier to do such things when you’re single, but it’s harder when there’s a family involved.
Balfe mentioned that Bloom’s face looked “gaunt” before filming began. “The transformation was shocking…I was like, ‘You look like a raisin,’” she added. John Turturro, also in the production, joked that Bloom put him through the challenge for money.
Bloom has experience adapting his weight for roles, notably gaining weight for his 1994 film Quiz Show and losing it for 1997’s The Truce. He said the former made him sick.
Balfe shared that she has never risked her health for an acting gig. The Cut, with a screenplay by Justin Bell and a story by Mark Lane, currently has no distributor or release date.
