Olivia Munn Shares Experience with Medically Induced Menopause during Cancer Treatment
She attributes the discovery of her cancer to her OB-GYN, Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi. Dr. Aliabadi recommended that Olivia use the Tyrer-Cuzick risk assessment calculator to calculate her lifetime breast cancer risk score, which led to the detection of Olivia’s high-risk score of 37.3. A subsequent MRI ordered by Dr. Aliabadi confirmed the presence of cancer.
After undergoing a double mastectomy, Olivia postponed reconstruction surgery until last fall to allow herself time to recover. Throughout this period, she chose to keep her diagnosis private, stating, “Keeping it private for as long as I did allowed me time to fight without any outside noise at all.”
Although Olivia has not needed radiation or chemotherapy, she started hormone suppression therapy in November to reduce her future risk. The treatment has induced menopause and caused symptoms such as heat flashes, hair thinning, and fatigue.
