Sebastian Stan Reflects on Unexpected Return as Bucky Barnes in Thunderbolts
After the events of Avengers: Endgame, the landscape has changed for many MCU characters. While some prominent characters like Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow have left, others have stayed. Sebastian Stan, who first appeared in the MCU in 2011 alongside Chris Evans in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” is returning to the superhero franchise. However, the character will have a new twist, as revealed by the actor.
Sebastian Stan teased his Thunderbolts* character will be a little different
The excitement for Thunderbolts* is building. The upcoming ensemble movie will see Sebastian Stan reprising his role as Bucky Barnes since his last appearance in the 2021 Disney+ show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier alongside Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. Stan also lent his voice to the animated series What If…?, but his return to live-action was eagerly anticipated for Thunderbolts*.
During a San Diego Comic-Con panel, Stan admitted to having doubts about his character’s return to the big screen. “I never expected to be back,” the actor shared. “It’s been an amazing journey for my character,” he added.
Having been part of the MCU for over 13 years, Stan’s character has undergone significant development. Fans can look forward to seeing a different side of Bucky in the upcoming movie. Stan described his character as being in a fun place and teased a more lighthearted version of Bucky from Brooklyn.

It’s clear that Stan was eager to return to his role in the MCU. The actor expressed how much he missed playing Bucky and shared his excitement at being back in action. He mentioned the strong cast of Thunderbolts* and how returning to his character was a great experience.
Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* is set for release on May 2, 2025.
