“Nelly and I are in a space where I am focusing on my career,” she mentioned on Hot 97. “He is focused on his own endeavors. This year, a lot of things came to light that had not been public before.”
Ashanti, who released her album Braveheart in 2014, continued, “I need to prioritize myself. We are currently in that phase. Some things were said and done that should not have happened, but they did.”
She later confirmed the breakup in 2015.
“I believe that sometimes when people are insecure, it leads them to behave in ways that are unlike themselves,” she shared on The Meredith Vieira Show. “I have been let down. But, you must mature and take responsibility for your actions.”
“I do not appreciate cowardice,” she emphasized. “It is crucial to know who you are, understand your desires, and go after them. I am currently in a different mindset.”
