Emily Bader explains why Edward Bluemel was the perfect choice to play her love interest in My Lady Jane
Emily Bader wowed viewers with her portrayal of Lady Jane Grey in the Amazon Prime Video historical fantasy television series, My Lady Jane. Discussing the series, the actress praised her co-star Edward Bluemel, who played the role of Lord Guildford Dudley, her on-screen love interest. Bader expressed that Bluemel was the perfect choice to play her love interest in the series.

In a recent conversation with PEOPLE, Emily Bader commended her co-star Edward Bluemel. She mentioned that upon meeting Bluemel, she immediately felt that he was the perfect fit for the role of Lord Guildford Dudley. Bader revealed that she did chemistry readings with five actors after being selected for the role.
Out of the five, Bluemel was the first one she connected with. Bader also complimented Edward Bluemel for his snarky and charming qualities, which she believed suited the role perfectly.
She said, “I was cast first and then very quickly we started doing chemistry reads. I think we read with maybe five different guys, but I read with Edward first, and he was in Nova Scotia somewhere… You never know who they’re going to go with, but I had a feeling. He just has that sort of snark and charm to him that I think fits the character well, and he’s a bit brooding. It was really exciting.”

My Lady Jane depicts Lady Jane Grey’s rise to power and her tragic romance with Lord Guildford Dudley. The series is based on a historical reinterpretation of Lady Jane Grey’s life by Jodi Meadows, Brodi Ashton, and Cynthia Hand.
In Lady Jane’s England, there are Ethians, outcast humans who can transform into animals. Surprisingly, Lord Guildford Dudley is also an Ethian who can turn into a horse, adding more depth to the story.
Describing her character, Bader mentioned that she is a combination of Blondie and Elizabeth Bennet, being rock and roll, badass, and cool. As an American, Bader discussed the challenges of portraying a British character and accent.
She candidly shared her worries about embodying a British character, admitting that she maintained the accent for the duration of filming until she felt more comfortable about six months in.
Bader’s successful portrayal of her character is evidenced by the positive reception from the audience. My Lady Jane premiered its eight episodes on June 27, 2024, and wrapped up Season 1 with potential for a Season 2. The series is available for streaming on Prime Video.
