Ryan Murphy, creator of Monsters, responds to criticism from Erik Menendez
“We know how it ended,” Ryan pointed out. “We know two people were brutally shot. Our goal was to present all the facts and encourage viewers to form their own opinions about who’s innocent, who’s guilty, and who’s the real monster. We also wanted to spark a conversation about a topic that isn’t often discussed in our culture: male sexual abuse, which we handle with care and responsibility.”
The new series prominently features Lyle and Erik’s defense in court, which claimed that the brothers had endured years of physical and sexual abuse from their parents.
“If you watch the show, a significant portion focuses on Erik and Lyle Menendez discussing their abuse, their victimization, and the emotional toll it took on them,” Ryan explained. “These two boys finally have the chance to share their story in court and beyond.”
As the experienced producer noted, “I’m no stranger to controversy. I tackle provocative topics, and my philosophy is ‘never complain, never explain.’”
