In 2021, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the makers of Mirzapur, Amazon Prime Video, and Excel Entertainment following a petition seeking a ban on the second season. The petition claimed that the series tarnished the historical and cultural image of the city/district. The petition also called for the establishment of a pre-screening committee for OTT content.
In 2022, the Supreme Court refused to stay the series and dismissed the case, stating that it is a work of fiction and the court cannot interfere. Subsequently, in October of the same year, a bench in the Supreme Court declared pre-censorship as impermissible.
