Meeting the Family of the Minnesota Governor
Gus Walz is the governor’s youngest child with wife Gwen.
Just like with Hope, the parents have shared glimpses of Gus’s daily life, from passing his driver’s license test to attending school and celebrating holidays with his family.
Gus has been a constant support to his father during his political journey. Walz even promised Gus a puppy if he won the governorship of Minnesota—a promise he kept in 2019 with a dog named Scout (The family also has a pet cat named Afton.)
At the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Gus was emotional as he cheered for his father.
“I never imagined as a father, I would experience something like that,” Walz said to CNN. “It was such a powerful moment for me to see my son proud of me for doing what I believe is right. We try to protect our kids, and this moment was just so emotional and meaningful for me.”
The couple has also openly discussed Gus being neurodivergent.
“As he entered his teenage years, we discovered that Gus has a non-verbal learning disorder along with an anxiety disorder and ADHD,” they shared with People in August 2024. “These are conditions that millions of Americans also deal with.”
They further explained, “It took time, but we realized that Gus’s condition is not a setback—it’s actually his hidden strength.”
