The Golden Advice Matthew McConaughey Shared with Surfer Griffin Colapinto
For those feeling unsteady heading into competition, Griffin advises embracing that discomfort like a wave.
“Be aware of your feelings,” he suggested. “Identify what challenges you, write it down, or confide in someone close to you. Recognizing those thoughts and feelings is half the battle.”
Griffin also highlights the importance of taking a mental health break, citing examples of fellow surfers on tour who have done so. “You can’t continue if you’re not fully present on the board,” he emphasized.
“You can’t be halfway in—it would only hurt you,” he added. “Acknowledging when you’re not feeling well and stepping back is significant. Surfers often return stronger after such breaks.”
