Mary Lou Retton Overwhelmed by Heartfelt Messages from 1984 Olympic Teammates
For Mary Lou Retton, the 1984 Olympics resulted in a lasting sisterhood of 40 years.
During an episode of the Kelly Clarkson Show on July 25, the gold medalist was surprised with a heartfelt videotaped message from her former teammates—Michelle Dusserre, 55, Pam Bileck, 55, Tracee Talavera, 57, Julianne McNamara, 58, and Kathy Johnson, 64—leading her to tears.
Dusserre expressed her joy that Retton, who had been hospitalized with a rare form of pneumonia last fall, was feeling better and encouraged her to continue improving. Johnson reassured Retton that they always have and always will support her, emphasizing, “You got this.”
Retton, 56, was visibly moved by the video and described it as incredibly special. She also mentioned that the “84 Squad” stays in touch through a group text, highlighting the enduring bond they share as best friends and sisters who have supported each other through life’s ups and downs over the past four decades.
