Marvel Unveils What If? Season 3 Featuring Phase 4 Characters Moon Knight, Shang-Chi, Iron Heart, and White Vision at D23 Expo; Details Revealed
In the latest news from Marvel’s What If…?, fans can expect to see the introduction of Moon Knight, portrayed by Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector and Steven Grant in the upcoming season 3. This announcement was made by Brad Winderbaum from Marvel Animation during a D23 panel, as reported by Comicbook.com.
While details about the number of episodes featuring Moon Knight are still unknown, it has been confirmed that one episode will see him teaming up with Captain America (Sam Wilson) and Monica Rambeau to battle gamma monsters.
Additionally, season 3 will also include characters like Shang-Chi and Ironheart, suggesting appearances by Simu Liu and Dominique Thorne.
Although the first season of Moon Knight ended with the potential for a second season, it has not been officially greenlit yet. Oscar Isaac, who previously portrayed Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse and voiced Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, confirmed that filming for the series is now underway despite challenges related to industry strikes in 2023.
In a sneak peek at the end of What If…? Season 2, fans were shown a glimpse of Season 3, which will feature a car chase involving Bucky Barnes and Red Guardian. Unlike the first season, episodes in the upcoming season will be released weekly, introducing new versions of familiar MCU characters from different universes.
Director Bryan Andrews hinted earlier this year that Season 3 may be released later in the year, but ultimately decisions about release dates are made by another team. A.C. Bradley, who served as head writer for the series, confirmed that the Bucky/Red Guardian episode is her final contribution to the show.
Marvel Studios Animation also teased other upcoming projects at D23, including X-Men ‘97, Eyes of Wakanda, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and Marvel Zombies. Hudson Thames, known for his role as Spider-Man in a What If…? episode, will be part of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, while Iman Vellani is confirmed for Marvel Zombies as Kamala Khan.
