Margot Robbie Hints She Might Not Return As Harley Quinn: ‘Put Her In Someone Else’s Hands’

Margot Robbie suggests she may not reprise her role as Harley Quinn: ‘Let someone else take over’

Margot Robbie may not be reprising her iconic role as Harley Quinn in the expanded DC Universe. She has portrayed the beloved supervillain in a total of three films – the two Suicide Squad sequels and Birds of Prey. However, it appears that she is moving on from that now.

The DCEU is currently in the process of rebooting the Batman franchise, with new actors being cast for both hero and villain roles. While it may be challenging to find someone to replace Robbie, given that she was the one who first brought Harley to life on the big screen, she believes that the possibilities are not limited.

In an interview with Variety, when asked if she would be ‘hanging up Harley’s bat,’ she hinted at a possible yes. With Lady Gaga now playing the supervillain with a more realistic approach in Joker: Folie à Deux, Robbie feels it’s time to let go. She mentioned, “Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”

Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix bring a more authentic portrayal of the characters in the latest film. In this version, it is not Quinzel who is the Joker’s therapist but an Arkham Asylum patient. This shifts their relationship from one based on psychological control to one where both characters seek love.

Robbie also expressed her desire for Harley to be a character passed on to other actresses, similar to iconic male characters like Batman and Superman. She stated, “I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her.”

After Margot Robbie’s last portrayal of Harley Quinn, there was uncertainty about her return. Despite the mixed reception of recent DCEU films, Robbie’s return or retirement as Quinn has not been officially confirmed. Fans may anticipate a healthier version of the Joker-Harley dynamic in The Penguin series with Sofia Falcone and her Arkham doctor, Julian Rush.
