Suhasini, wife of Mani Ratnam, reflects on their enduring marriage of over 30 years and emphasizes the importance of mutual respect in keeping their relationship strong
Mani Ratnam is undeniably one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the country, known for delivering unparalleled cinematic experiences on the big screen. However, apart from his filmmaker persona, he leads a vastly different life in his personal sphere. Shedding light on this aspect, his wife, Suhasini, shared some candid insights into the impeccable life they have built together.
In an interview with Mathrubhumi, Suhasini Maniratnam revealed that mutual respect is the cornerstone of her marriage with Mani Ratnam. Despite both of them being creatively inclined, they make it a point to listen to each other and value each other’s creative talents.
She mentioned, “We both take the time to listen to each other’s creative ideas. We may not always agree right away when one of us has a new concept, but I respect his creative vision, and he respects mine. This mutual respect prevents major conflicts. Of course, there might be disagreements because I deeply care about him.”
Continuing the conversation, Suhasini also voiced her concerns for her husband, who operates in a dynamic environment surrounded by individuals whose personalities may not always align with his own.
She expressed her worries about how these negative influences could potentially impact Mani Ratnam and subsequently influence the type of cinema he produces.
Suhasini elaborated, “When he collaborates with a cinematographer who frequently uses profanity in conversations, I warn him that it might start to influence his dialogues as they work closely. These are the kind of influences that worry me because cinema reflects real life. What we observe in life is often reflected in cinema. So, I keep a close watch on him.”
Wrapping up the interview, Suhasini shared a valuable piece of advice she received from her husband, who always reminds her not to take things for granted. She mentioned how Mani Ratnam consistently advises her to work smart rather than just putting in hard work.
For those unfamiliar, Mani Ratnam and Suhasini got married in 1988. The couple has collaborated on various films, with Suhasini writing the story and Mani Ratnam directing them. Some of their notable projects include Roja, Ravana, Thiruda Thiruda, Iruvar, and more.
