Anurag Kashyap boldly declares ‘Malayalam cinema triumphs over Bollywood’
Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, known for directing cult films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Ugly, Dev D, and others, has caused a stir with a recent Instagram story where he made a thought-provoking analogy.
Anurag Kashyap shared an Instagram post titled “Why Malayalam Cinema Is Better Than Bollywood,” which has quickly gone viral. It’s rare for Bollywood filmmakers to openly acknowledge their admiration for another regional cinema, making Kashyap’s statement quite significant.
Why does Anurag Kashyap think Malayalam Cinema is superior?
Anurag Kashyap shared a post by ScoopWhoop on his Instagram story, discussing why Malayalam cinema is better than Bollywood. According to the post, the authenticity and relatable characters portrayed on screen set Malayalam cinema apart from Bollywood’s emphasis on drama.
The post further mentions that the success of Malayalam cinema can be attributed to the active involvement of film personalities in production houses. Films like Aavesham and Premalu, where Fahadh Faasil is involved in production, serve as recent examples.
Anurag Kashyap’s contribution to South Cinema
Anurag Kashyap has been gradually immersing himself in South Indian Cinema. After being impressed by Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, he expressed his desire to work with Lokesh Kanagaraj and ended up participating in Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo, where he played a memorable death scene.
His other contributions to South Indian cinema include playing an important antagonist role in Nayanthara’s Imaikkaa Nodigal (2018) and appearing in the blockbuster Maharaja with Vijay Sethupathi. Despite increasing presence in South cinema, Kashyap has not been part of any Malayalam film yet.
Anurag Kashyap’s appreciation for Malayalam cinema not only celebrates its unique appeal but also indicates a growing appreciation for its filmmaking style. As Malayalam cinema continues to garner success, its influence is being acknowledged beyond regional boundaries.
