Actress Vijayta Pandit shares how Kumar Gaurav promised to marry her while engaged to Raj Kapoor’s daughter: ‘Our love story unfolded…’
Vijayta Pandit has opened up about her past relationship with her first co-star, Kumar Gaurav. The two shot to fame after their debut film Love Story. In a recent interview with Lehren Retro, the former actress addressed rumors surrounding her role in the cancellation of Kumar Gaurav’s engagement to Raj Kapoor’s daughter, Reema Jain. Pandit shared that despite her engagement to Jain, Kumar promised to marry her and they ended up falling in love.
She recalled how during the filming of Love Story, Kumar Gaurav, fondly known as Bunty, was the first boy she hugged. She mentioned that many romantic films like Bobby, Betaab, and Rocky often had actors who fell in love off-screen as well, which added depth to their performances. She described Bunty as genuinely affectionate, being attentive, holding her hand, dancing with her, and full of charm.
However, their relationship faced disapproval from Kumar’s father and the film’s producer, Rajendra Kumar, who expressed his displeasure while drinking and insisted that Bunty should marry someone from a high-status family. This caused anxiety for Vijayta, even though Bunty would stand up to his father, expressing his love for her.
Vijayta shared that despite Bunty’s deep affection for her, Rajendra Kumar arranged for Kumar Gaurav to be engaged to Reema Jain. She attended the engagement ceremony and admired the large diamond ring Reema received. When she complimented the ring, Bunty reacted angrily, threatening to get rid of it if she didn’t like it, which concerned her, prompting her to leave.
Even after the engagement, Bunty continued to visit her, but she refrained from going to his home. Her parents were worried, with her father considering asking Rajendra Kumar to ensure that Bunty stopped visiting them. Despite his engagement, Bunty expressed his desire to marry Vijayta, which her mother dismissed as impossible.
Although Bunty vowed to marry her, she later found out about his involvement with Namrata Dutt, which led to the cancellation of his engagement with Reema. She clarified that she had no role in this development.
