Lewis Pullman Reflects on His First Emmy Nomination from Chemistry Lessons
Lewis Pullman has just been nominated for his first-ever Emmy, but he’s not feeling nervous about it. The actor, who won the best supporting actor in a limited series or movie made for television award for his role alongside Brie Larson in Lessons in Chemistry, is now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (he’s part of the cast of Thunderbolts). He also previously appeared in Top Gun: Maverick and says that nothing compares to the nerves he experienced on that set. Pullman shares his thoughts with The Hollywood Reporter about being a first-time Emmy nominee and discusses his dad, actor Bill Pullman’s reaction to the nomination.
First, congratulations. Has it set in yet?
I’m in my office in pajamas, still trying to process the news. I pretended my phone wasn’t exploding during a Zoom call, so I’ve only had about 15 minutes to digest everything. It hasn’t fully sunk in yet, and I’m grateful they don’t announce the nominations super early in the morning anymore.
Have you met anyone particularly cool or exciting on the trail?
I met Ayo Edebiri and Dakota Fanning and felt starstruck. Everything moves so quickly during campaigning; it feels like a whirlwind. I’m honored to be in the same category as Lamorne Morris, who just texted me in a humorous way.
Do you know how he got your number?
He got it from Glen Powell.
What did your parents have to say?
My dad texted me saying, “Yay — the nomination!!!” and I responded with “Whoa, Nellie!”.
When you met Ayo, were you able to talk about Thunderbolts at all?
The interactions are brief at events like that, so I congratulated Ayo on her work and expressed excitement for her future projects.
What are you expecting in the months leading up to the Emmys?
I look forward to meeting many talented people on the nominee list and learning from them. There are so many respected individuals in the mix, and it’s an exciting opportunity to connect.
Is there a performance you’re most impressed by this season?
I thought Andrew Scott, Jon Hamm, Matt Bomer, Richard Gadd, Tom Hollander, and the team from The Bear delivered exceptional performances. There’s tough competition, with talented actors like Walton Goggins in the mix.
Have you discussed a potential season two of Lessons in Chemistry with the team?
I think any potential continuation would be up to the creators, and it would involve creative brainstorming to extend the story. Flashbacks or new creative ideas might be explored.
What about flashbacks? A Lost flash sideways?
Flashbacks are always a possibility with a talented team of writers. I’m open to exploring different storytelling methods.
Before we wrap up, how do you plan to celebrate?
I might drive to my parents’ place, attend a dance lesson with my mom, take my dog for a walk, and have a beer.
What’s your beer of choice?
I enjoy simple beers like Coors Light or Miller Lite. I don’t have a sophisticated palate when it comes to beer.
