Andy Samberg Opens Up About the Emotional Challenges of Portraying a Photojournalist in a War Film
Andy Samberg is set to co-star with Kate Winslet in the upcoming war film, Lee. Samberg will play the role of photojournalist David E. Scherman, who will accompany Winslet’s character, Lee Miller, a Vogue model turned photographer.
Discussing the role he is set to play, Scherman famously captured a controversial picture of Miller and Adolf Hitler in the latter’s bathtub. In an interview, Samberg revealed the challenges of portraying the character in the context of the Nazi era and the Holocaust.
Reflecting on the role, Samberg shared, “You try to take on the weight of the moment, try to allow all that sadness and horribleness into your soul, and try to represent how absolutely horrible it would be to bear witness to it.”
He added, “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about my own family, my own lineage, and how many were lost. And all the stories that I’ve been told about it.”
Known for his comedic roles, Samberg has ventured into a more serious role for Lee, immersing himself in the portrayal of a war photojournalist surrounded by stories and controversies.
The film will explore the true story of Lee Miller, an ex-Vogue cover girl who became a war photographer during World War II. Samberg and Winslet will be joined by Marion Cottilard, Jud Law, and Andrea Riseborough in the movie.
Despite initial hesitation, Samberg agreed to the role after a personal call from Winslet. The movie is set to be released in theaters.
