Update on Jordan Chiles from Laurie Hernandez following recent controversy
When her coaches submitted an inquiry on her behalf, everything changed. As per NBC Olympics, an inquiry involves challenging a routine’s score verbally, followed by a written submission before the rotation ends. This challenge can only be made after the gymnast’s final score is posted and before the next gymnast’s routine begins.
If the gymnast is the last to perform, a one-minute time limit starts after the score is displayed on the scoreboard, as per the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).
The inquiry focused on a split leap in Chiles’ routine known as the tour jeté full. Olympian and NBC gymnastics analyst John Roethlisberger explained during the broadcast that Chiles did not receive credit for this skill in the team competition. However, her coaches Cecile and Laurent Landi believed she performed it better in the final, prompting them to submit an inquiry.
After evaluating Chiles’ routine, the judges accepted the inquiry, awarding her 0.1 for the leap and boosting her score to 13.766, securing third place.
Chiles, overwhelmed with happiness, won the bronze medal. Meanwhile, Barbosu, who had already been celebrating her own performance with Romania’s flag, lost her spot on the podium.
