Types of kindness showcased by Emilia Perez
The first 29 productions in contention for the 2024 European Film Awards have been selected by the European Film Academy.
The list includes highlights from this year’s festivals, such as Cannes winners Emilia Pérez, The Substance and Kinds of Kindness by Jacques Audiard, Coralie Fargeat, and Yorgos Lanthimos. Other notable films include Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap and Berlinale favorites Crossing by Levan Akin, The Devil’s Bath by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, and Dying by Matthias Glasner.
Leading the pack in terms of commercial success is Paola Cortellesi’s There’s Still Tomorrow, an Italian dramedy that topped the local box office in 2023.
To qualify for the 2024 EFAs, a film must have had its first official screening between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024, and be directed by a European filmmaker. Non-European directors with European refugee status or significant European industry experience are also eligible, like Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof with his latest film The Seed of the Sacred Fig.
The selected films represent all 26 European countries, including EU and non-EU nations like Turkey (Crossing) and post-Brexit Britain (Andrea Arnold’s Bird). The EFA board will present these titles to the European Academy’s 5,000 voting members for potential nominations, with a second selection coming in September.
Nominees for the 2024 European Film Awards will be announced on Nov. 5, with the awards ceremony taking place in Lucerne, Switzerland on Dec. 7.
