Kate Winslet shares ‘flirtatious’ voicemails with a producer
On June 5, at the FYC Panel event in Los Angeles, Winslet discussed her process of creating her character. She explained that it was crucial for her not to sound like herself. She wanted to find a voice that was distinct from her own.
Winslet revealed that she initially experimented with the accent in her kitchen at home, eliciting a critical reaction from her family members who described it as unbearable.
The actress shared that she left voicemails as Chancellor Vernham (her character in The Regime) for Jessica Hobbs, the show’s director and executive producer. Hobbs responded positively to the voice Winslet had tested out.
She later showcased her voice to the show’s executive producer and director, Stephen Frears. Sitting him down, she suggested, “If I speak like this and add a touch of flirtation, I can probably convince you to do anything.” Winslet recalled his response, saying, “You have to maintain that for six months.”
