Jordan Chiles Awarded Bronze Medal After Successful Appeal
Despite $1.53 billion being allocated for cleaning the perennially polluted Seine, concerns arose before the Paris Games about the safety of holding swimming events in the river.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo swam in the river on July 17 and deemed it safe, but issues have arisen since the start of the Olympics.
Triathlon swim practice on July 29 was canceled due to poor water quality from heavy rain over the weekend, leading to the men’s event being postponed to July 31.
Both triathlons took place on July 31 with water quality meeting EU standards, but concerns resurfaced after two athletes fell ill post-competition.
The 10,000-meter events are still scheduled for Aug. 8 and 9, but practices were called off on Aug. 6 due to high bacteria levels.
