John Waters has entertained audiences for over sixty years, with a mix of humor, shock, and thought-provoking content. Known for iconic films like Hairspray and Pink Flamingos, as well as cult classics like Serial Mom and Cry-Baby, Waters, often referred to as the “Pope of Trash,” has consistently pushed the boundaries of filmmaking. Despite never leaving his hometown of Baltimore, Waters has solidified his status as a Hollywood legend.
John Waters talks about his dream cast
A-list actors continue to seek out opportunities to collaborate with Waters. Aubrey Plaza has been cast in the film adaptation of his upcoming book Liarmouth, even without a production company attached to the project. Although Waters has not directed a film since 2004, his contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, including a dedicated exhibition at the Academy Museum and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
During an interview before hosting Mosswood Meltdown in Oakland, Waters shared details about the potential Liarmouth film, his biggest regret, and the legacy he hopes to leave behind in his career.
“Sure. But they’re going to be in this movie, so I can’t talk about it yet. Yeah, there’s plenty. I met Meryl Streep, but she never said, ‘Let’s meet.'”
Waters never reads a script he didn’t write
Waters has a distinct approach to creativity, refusing to adapt someone else’s work into a film. He emphasized the importance of writing his own scripts and the joy he finds in the process of creation. Waters’ ability to attract and nurture talent has been evident in his Dreamland collective and his collaborations with renowned actors.
Fans are eagerly anticipating the release of the upcoming Liarmouth film, particularly with Aubrey Plaza in the lead role. Plaza’s unique talents align perfectly with Waters’ unconventional style, showcasing his knack for attracting top talent to his projects.
