Mark Harmon’s Surprising Response to the Possibility of His Return as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS: “It’s Truly About a Feeling”
Mark Harmon, famously known for portraying Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, is currently involved in a new project. He is lending his voice to a new series titled NCIS: Origins, a project he co-created with his son, Sean Harmon. During the promotion of this new series, Harmon was asked about the possibility of his return to NCIS. Here’s what he had to say;
Mark Harmon on whether he will reprise his role as Gibbs in NCIS
At the TCA Summer 2024 event, Harmon revealed that he is frequently questioned about returning to NCIS, as reported by TV Line. His response was quite ambiguous, stating, “I’ve always let the writers do what they want to do.”
When directly asked if he has received an invitation to reprise his role as Gibbs by TVLine, Harmon’s reply was unexpected: “Directly, like a phone call´´´? Not that I’m aware of.” This indicates that the show’s creators have not reached out to him for a return nor have they developed a storyline for Gibbs’ comeback.
When pressed about whether he would consider a return if invited, Harmon remained noncommittal. He mentioned, “I don’t know. It’s really about a feeling like you’re fulfilled with a role, or complete with a role.” Despite this, he continues to serve as an executive producer on the show.
Harmon was also questioned about what he believes Gibbs would be up to now. His response was, “I don’t think he’s still standing in the stream,” implying that Gibbs is likely still engaged in some form of saving the world.
During the previous season, NCIS marked its 1,000th episode milestone, but Harmon was notably absent. Showrunner Steven D. Binder expressed interest in Harmon’s return, stating, “Of course, the door is always open.” Binder hinted that if Harmon does return, it would be for a significant role rather than a brief appearance. “When we bring him back, we’re not going to bring him back for two minutes,” as reported by TvShowsace.
