Jodie Foster Prefers the Technical Aspect of Filmmaking Over Acting: ‘It’s Just Not My Way’
Even though she’s an Oscar-winning actress, Jodie Foster would prefer a technical job over acting any day! She never truly “fell in love” with the acting side of the industry and would have chosen to be a lawyer or college professor if given the opportunity.
Jodie Forter’s perspective on not enjoying the acting aspect of the industry
She may be one of the few celebrities with this unconventional view. While most actors enjoy the acting part of their job and dislike the showbiz aspects, Foster takes a different stance. Though she’s not particularly fond of showbiz, she is definitely not passionate about acting!
In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, the Nyad actress shared that she was pushed into the industry at the age of three, leaving her with no alternative but to continue on this path. “I probably would’ve pursued a career as a lawyer or a college professor. It’s just not my calling.”
Despite her love for the technical aspects of filmmaking and her directorial roles in some movies, she never had a passion for acting. “It went against my nature, and I believe it has enriched me as a person,” she further explained. Can someone not love acting yet be so captivating on screen? That’s the magic of it all!
Foster’s insights as a director
In the filmmaking realm of the industry, which resonates well with the Taxi Driver actress, she has built a solid reputation. Foster has directed several films, including Home for the Holidays and Money Monster.
She revealed that she has found her stride as a director. “When I direct, I enjoy discussing techniques with people, but I prefer not to delve too deeply into an actor’s personal space, as I find it intrusive,” she articulated.
However, she draws the line at revealing too much about her personal life or childhood. “Don’t try to be one with me,” she reiterated. The Silence of The Lambs actress emphasizes the importance of pre-production in a film and encourages her team to ask as many questions as possible.
This approach helps in creating something “cohesive and feels spontaneous, raw, and fresh.” She recounted instances where she had to do over 120 takes because a director didn’t prioritize the pre-production phase.
Recently, Foster received a nomination at the 96th Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Nyad and is set to appear in the upcoming fourth season of HBO’s True Detective.
