Exploring Malia Obama’s Private Life Post-White House Upbringing
Malia Obama was eager to embark on her own journey after completing high school, and especially after graduating from college.
Upon deciding to attend Harvard, the former first daughter took a gap year to travel and intern in New York, experiencing life almost like any other regular teenager, despite the presence of bodyguards and private jets.
In July 2016, she accompanied her sister Sasha Obama, mother Michelle Obama, and grandmother Marian Robinson on a trip to Liberia and Morocco to support the Let Girls Learn Initiative. The Obama family then continued their tradition of spending the summer in Martha’s Vineyard.
Later that year, Malia spent 83 days in Peru and Bolivia, staying with a family in Tiquipaya, a trip that went unnoticed until her return to the U.S.
“She was very down-to-earth, conversational, and fluent in Spanish,” recounted Gregorio Mamani, one of the guides during a hiking expedition in the Cordillera Real mountain range, as reported by The New York Times. “She was captivated by the stunning Bolivian scenery.” Despite increased security measures, all participants on the trip were responsible for themselves, and Malia reportedly contributed admirably, assisting with cooking and other tasks.
