Chris Evans Rejects Cue Cards Offered by Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool & Wolverine Monologue: ‘I’m Showing Up Off-Book’
Chris Evans was excited to make a surprise cameo in Marvel’s latest hit Deadpool & Wolverine, at the request of his friend Ryan Reynolds. The former Captain America actor spoke to People about how Reynolds presented the idea to him, assuring Evans that there was no pressure to accept. However, Reynolds believed the cameo could be a showstopper and allow Evans to revisit a character from his past.
Evans reprised his role as Johnny Storm/Human Torch from Fantastic Four for the cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, which premiered on July 26. He was willing to do anything Reynolds asked of him due to their trust and previous collaboration in Free Guy. Evans couldn’t resist the opportunity to play Johnny again and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
He shared, “Ryan was like, ‘Listen, if we need cue cards’ and I was like, ‘Cue cards? I’m showing up off-book.’ I don’t get to say dialogue like this. Trust me. I’m going to enjoy every second of this. Memorized.”
In a post-credits scene in the film, Evans delivered a monologue filled with swear words and innuendos, a departure from his ‘Language’ police character Steve Rogers. This scene mirrored the moment Johnny Storm gives Cassandra Nova the same set of flowers that get him cooked.
Despite Reynolds offering cue cards for the lines, Evans insisted he had memorized everything and relished the opportunity to deliver such dialogue.
Aside from his acting career, Chris Evans has teamed up with the Jinx premium dog food brand for a United Service Organizations (USO) campaign. Starting August 1st, Jinx will donate 5% of Walmart purchases towards supporting service personnel, including the USO Canine Program. Evans mentioned that his dog, Dodger, loves the food and that was all he needed to support the cause.
Up next, Evans will appear in the Christmas movie Red One in November, alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and J.K. Simmons, who will portray Santa Claus. During a recent interview, Evans described the project as a fun Spielberg-style film, directed by Jake Kasdan.
