Teeny Teen Mom’s Cory and Cheyenne Discuss Race with Daughter Ryder
Having conversations with your kids about racism can be daunting. Cory expressed this feeling, saying, “I don’t want to tell my 7-year-old that Santa doesn’t exist.”
However, for Cheyenne, not having these conversations can be even scarier.
Cheyenne explained, “We start having these conversations at a younger age in our household, especially with the boys. My nephew is 5, and we’re already discussing these issues with him because he needs to be aware of the differences. He’s already been in situations where we’ve had to explain, ‘No, you can’t do this, because this could happen.'”
One story they shared involved a cousin who played a harmless game of ding-dong ditch with her white friends. Cheyenne recounted, “She was the only Black one among her white friends, and she was the one that the police got mad at. She had to realize that she didn’t have the same privileges as her friends, and that’s why she faced consequences. Unfortunately, we have to have these difficult conversations much earlier. I wish it wasn’t necessary, but it’s the reality we live in.”
