Shannen Doherty’s Triumph Over Personal Turmoil on the Set
Doherty was described as a “great actress, loves her family so much,” and the speaker wished they had been strong enough to recognize that about her back then.
Despite her admitted immature missteps, Doherty was strong and unafraid to assert herself even before it became fashionable to do so.
“If being ‘difficult’ means being a strong woman who stands up for herself, then yes, I own it,” Doherty shared with Rolling Stone in 1992. “I’m open to different perspectives, but if you disrespect me and treat me differently than you would a man, then we have a problem.”
She had stood her ground early on by rejecting a storyline where Brenda wanted to lose weight, as she didn’t want to negatively impact her young fans during a time when eating disorders were prevalent.
This decision marked a step forward in thinking at a time when even the star’s hair color was subject to stereotypes.
