Darius Rucker of Hootie & the Blowfish Addresses Drug-Related Arrest
Darius has always been open about his past struggles with substance abuse, including mushrooms, ecstasy, cocaine, and more, as he shares in his upcoming memoir Life’s Too Short. He credits his ex-wife Beth Leonard for supporting him in his journey to sobriety, particularly for encouraging him to quit.
Reflecting on his decision to stop using, Darius said, “When I quit, I quit. It was a moment where I realized I needed to make a change, so I walked away from it. It turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made. I often say that Beth truly saved my life by pushing me to quit.”
The singer of “Let Her Cry” is thankful that he and his bandmates—Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, and Jim Sonefeld—have transformed their lives for the better.
“We have meaningful conversations,” Darius, who is also a father to Caroline, 28, with his ex Elizabeth Ann Phillips, shared. “We’re grateful that all four of us are still together and able to continue our music because it would have been easy for one of us to not be here.”
