Legendary actress Dame Maggie Smith, known for her role in Harry Potter, has passed away at the age of 89 on Friday, September 27. Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, shared the news of her peaceful passing surrounded by loved ones. Dame Maggie Smith is survived by her two sons and five grandchildren.
In a statement released by Larkin and Stephens, they said, “She passed away peacefully in the hospital early this morning, Friday, 27th September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves behind two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”
The statement also thanked the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care during her final days and requested privacy at this time.
Dame Maggie Smith had a successful career in Hollywood, with iconic roles in films such as The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and the Harry Potter franchise. She continued to captivate audiences with her performances on stage and screen.
Her most memorable role was that of Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies. She portrayed the character from 2001 to 2007, earning an Oscar for her performance.
Recently, she appeared in Downtown Abbey in 2019 and reprised her role in the sequel, Downtown Abbey: The New Era, in 2022. This marked her final film role in Hollywood.
In her personal life, Dame Maggie Smith was married twice, first to actor Robert Stephens and later to Beverley Cross, who passed away in 1998.
