‘Hacks’ Triumphs Against ‘The Bear’
Hacks caused a major upset in the final category at the 2024 Emmys.
The Max series, Hacks, won the Emmy Award for best comedy series for its third season, securing its third win of the ceremony. Other nominees in the category included The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, Reservation Dogs and What We Do in the Shadows.
In her acceptance speech, Lucia Aniello, co-creator of the series, highlighted the importance of comedy in bridging divides. Co-creator Paul W. Downs also spoke about the challenges they faced initially with the show featuring two female characters, one of whom was over 60.
Hacks also secured wins for best actress in a comedy series for Jean Smart and best writing in a comedy series for Aniello, Downs, and Jen Statsky. The show, featuring Hannah Einbinder, received 16 nominations for the 2024 Emmys.
Many expected the FX/Hulu series The Bear to win the best comedy series category for the second year in a row, but Hacks emerged as the surprise winner. The debate over whether The Bear could be considered too dramatic for the comedy category also continued.
During the ceremony, Eugene Levy, the co-host alongside his son Dan Levy, humorously addressed the discussion around whether The Bear was a comedy or not.
Social media posts from Hannah Einbinder’s mother, Laraine Newman, criticized The Bear for being nominated in the comedy category, expressing disbelief at the decision.
