Scottie Scheffler, Golfer, Detained Outside of PGA Championship
Later, Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, commented on the incident.
“Numerous eyewitnesses have confirmed that he did not commit any wrongdoing but was simply following instructions,” Romines stated in a message shared by Sports Illustrated reporter Pat Forde on X, formerly Twitter on May 17. “He stopped immediately when instructed to do so and never assaulted any officer with his vehicle. We will go to court as necessary and he will be fully cleared of any charges.”
The second round of the golf tournament, originally scheduled to start at 7:15 a.m., was postponed due to the accident and resumed at 8:35 a.m. Scheffler returned to the golf club around 9 a.m. and teed off about an hour later.
The incident occurred during a busy period for Scheffler, who recently won his second Masters Tournament at Augusta Golf Club last month, shortly before the birth of his first child with his wife, Meredith.
“I believe I am growing as both a person and a player,” he told the Golf Channel soon after his Masters victory. “I think emotionally, this has been one of my most successful weeks on the course.”
