Showrunner Eric Kripke Defends The Boys Against Claims of Being ‘Woke’
Showrunner Eric Kipke remains steadfast in his commitment. The writer and TV producer, who turned his 2019 show, The Boys, into a successful franchise, is unfazed by the strong reactions to the dark political satire in his plots.
Despite starting with a warm reception from fans, after three seasons, The Boys is now being labeled as ‘woke’ in the media. Kipke, however, isn’t bothered by this and responded to critics and those who dislike woke themes by suggesting they find another show to watch instead.
He went on to explain how the storylines of the show, written in advance, are reflecting the current reality.
Eric Kipke discusses The Boys’ woke criticism
Eric Kipke, aged 50, sat down for an interview ahead of the highly anticipated Season 4 premiere of The Boys. Among other topics, he addressed the criticism of woke themes in the show’s plots.
When asked about the negative reception, Kipke told The Hollywood Reporter, “Anyone who wants to call the show ‘woke’ or whatever, that’s OK. Go watch something else.”
The showrunner emphasized his clear perspective and his willingness to integrate that perspective into the show without holding back or apologizing for what they are doing.
In addition, Kipke, also known for creating Supernatural for The CW, hinted that the show is interpreted differently by different viewers. He mentioned how some see Homelander as a hero, while others view him as a satirical representation of former President Donald Trump.
“The show is many things. Subtle is not one of them. So if that’s the message you’re getting from it, I just throw up my hands,” the TV producer remarked.
The Boys has become known for drawing parallels to current social issues and political affiliations. Kipke remains unapologetic about his creative inspirations as the highly anticipated Season 4 premiere approaches on Thursday, June 13.

Showrunner Kipke, named THR’s TV Producer of the Year, discussed the Season 4 plot, which will feature Homelander being tried under fascist pretexts. Referring to the show’s prescience, Kipke joked, “Sometimes we feel like we’re Satan’s writer’s room.”
He admitted he didn’t foresee the show coinciding with Trump’s trial. The former President was found guilty of multiple felonies in a recent hush-money trial on May 30, 2024, as reported by Bloomberg.
Discussing the show’s references to over-policing in Black communities, Kipke speculated that this social issue has endured for decades and will likely continue for the next five years as well.
The Boys Season 4 will premiere on Thursday, June 13, 2024, on Prime Video.
