As fans made their way to the stadium for the season opener, they encountered the incident and wondered if their star player would be able to participate in the game.
“That was quite a surprise on the way, man,” shared Hill, who is nicknamed “Cheetah” for being the fastest player in the NFL, during a post-game interview.

Hill, who was originally drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016, was handcuffed on the morning of Sunday, September 8. According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington in a post on X (formerly Twitter), “I’m told by sources Tyreek Hill was cited for reckless driving as a result of his incident outside the stadium with police.” Darlington further explained, “After he was pulled over, he got into a verbal altercation with police. The officer chose to place Hill in handcuffs. He was cited and released after the situation was deescalated.”
As videos of the arrest began circulating online, the Miami Dolphins released a statement on X confirming both the incident and Hill’s playing status. The statement read, “He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived at the stadium and will be available for today’s game.”

Though Hill was released by the Miami-Dade County Police, Department Director Stephanie V. Daniels stated in a release on X that there would be an “immediate review of all details surrounding the incident, and we are also reviewing available body camera footage.”
In a sideline interview with CBS Sports, which he also shared on his Instagram, Hill said, “At the end of the day, dog, I got a job to do, and my job is to come inside this stadium and be great, dog.”
He added in a post-game interview that he was unsure why he was detained. “I wasn’t disrespectful because my mom didn’t raise me that way. Didn’t cuss. Didn’t do none of that. Like I said, I’m still trying to figure it out,” he shared.
He continued, “What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? Lord knows what that guy or guys would have done. I was just making sure that I was doing what my uncle always told me to do whenever you’re in a situation like that: ‘Just listen, put your hands on the steering wheel and just listen’.”
Despite a rough start to his morning, Hill excelled on the field, gaining a total of 130 receiving yards, 7 receptions, and an 80-yard touchdown.
The Miami Dolphins won the game, scoring 20 points and defeating Jacksonville by 3 points, thanks to a field goal.
