Kevin Feige Confirms Eternals 2 is Not Currently in Marvel’s Future Plans
Following the release of Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe took a new direction, exploring TV shows and movies that broke away from the traditional MCU formula, such as the ambitious Eternals. Directed by Chloe Zhao, Eternals was met with both critical and commercial disappointment, earning the title of the worst-reviewed film in the MCU and ranking at the bottom. Despite this, Marvel Studios has not announced any plans for a sequel to Eternals.
Kevin Feige Provides Update on Eternals 2
Fans eager for a potential Eternals 2 announcement at San Diego Comic-Con this year may be disappointed. Despite aiming to be a unique addition to Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and possibly garnering Oscar recognition, Eternals received mixed reactions from audiences and critics.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that there are currently no immediate plans for a sequel to the three-year-old film Eternals, despite fan expectations due to the cliffhanger ending and post-credits scenes. The studio’s focus is on other projects at the moment. Feige mentioned in an interview, “There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2,” while promoting Deadpool & Wolverine. “However, there have been hints of future events in recent trailers. Some significant things emerged from the ocean.”
Eternals grossed just over $400 million worldwide, marking a lower box office return compared to other MCU films. The negative reception of the film even impacted some of the actors involved.
“I knew it wasn’t me. There were several factors at play. I adore that movie and I am extremely proud of it. I’ve watched it multiple times because it’s my kind of film, and I rarely watch my own work. It was tough because Marvel had high hopes for the movie to be well-received, so they lifted the embargo early, presented it at prestigious film festivals, and sent us on a global promotional tour right after the embargo was lifted,” as shared by Kumail Nanjiani on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum.
Potential Return of the Eternals
Captain America: Brave New World is expected to address the mystery surrounding the giant Celestial head from Eternals, a storyline that has intrigued fans since the film’s release in November 2021. The film also hints at Dane Whitman becoming the Black Knight and aligning with Blade, a character teased in Eternals but now facing changes behind the scenes.
Regarding the Eternals themselves, it’s likely that these characters may not feature prominently for a while. Feige mentioned that not all Phase 4 MCU characters will appear in Avengers 5, suggesting that the Eternals may be on hold for now. Nevertheless, Marvel has a history of reintroducing characters even after significant gaps. The Incredible Hulk was initially overlooked in the MCU storyline, but characters like The Leader and Betty Ross are set to return in future MCU projects.
The Eternals could potentially make appearances as secondary characters in other MCU films, similar to the Hulk’s role in a solo film. They might be integrated into a cosmic hero project like Thor 5, a new Guardians of the Galaxy installment, or the upcoming Nova series. Harry Styles could reprise his role as Starfox from one of Eternals’ post-credits scenes, possibly leading to the Hulk’s return in Captain America: Brave New World.
