Renowned ESPN NFL Reporter Chris Mortensen Dies at 72
The sports broadcasting world is in mourning.
Chris Mortensen, a longtime NFL reporter and analyst for ESPN for over 30 years, passed away on March 3 at the age of 72, as confirmed by his family to the sports network. The renowned journalist, who retired in the previous year, leaves behind a lasting legacy.
“Mort was a true trailblazer in the industry and was cherished as a supportive and dedicated colleague,” stated ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro. “His coverage of the NFL was marked by exceptional talent and dedication, making him a leading figure in his field for many years. His absence will be deeply felt by both coworkers and fans, and our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”
Chris is survived by his wife of 39 years, Micki Mortensen, aged 65, and their son, Alex Mortensen, aged 38, who is both a football coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a former quarterback.
A California native and veteran of the Army, Chris began his career in journalism as an investigative sports reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, primarily covering the Atlanta Braves and Falcons. His exceptional work earned him the George Polk Award in 1987. Over the course of his career, he received 18 journalism awards and was twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
