Emraan Hashmi discusses being stereotyped as the ‘serial kisser’ in Bollywood; takes responsibility instead of blaming audience
Emraan Hashmi, the actor, rose to fame with his role in Anurag Basu’s erotic thriller, Murder, in 2006. He portrayed the character of an obsessive lover with numerous kissing scenes in the film.
Following Murder, Emraan Hashmi continued to have kissing scenes in his other movies, leading to him being known as the ‘serial kisser’ of Bollywood in the early 2000s.
Emraan Hashmi shares his thoughts on the ‘serial kisser’ label
During a recent podcast with journalist Shubhankar Mishra on YouTube, Emraan Hashmi discussed how he was typecast as a serial kisser in Hindi cinema.
“I think many artists get a certain image attached to them, and it sticks with them,” Hashmi stated.
He mentioned Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic pose and Salman Khan’s shirtless scenes as examples of such iconic images for actors in the industry.

Emraan Hashmi explained how having a specific label could make it easier for the audience to identify an actor. He acknowledged that for a significant part of his career, he was associated with being a serial kisser, which he and the producers capitalized on.
Hashmi also reflected on the boldness of his characters in films like Murder, where his portrayal was unconventional compared to the typical righteous heroes in Bollywood.
While Emraan Hashmi had a cameo appearance in Sara Ali Khan’s Ae Watan Mere Watan in 2024, he is set to appear in two Telugu films, OG and G2.
