Emma Stone expresses regret over jokingly referring to Taylor Swift as an “asshole” – Rolling Stone Magazine
Emma Stone learned a difficult but important lesson about rabid fandom and the context-destroying vortex that is the Internet: No matter how good your intentions are or how good a friend you are to Taylor Swift, it’s probably better not to make jokes about her.
This past January, Stone won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for her performance in The poor things, and received particularly enthusiastic applause from Swift, who was in the audience that night. Speaking to reporters later, Stone was asked about Swift’s enthusiasm and replied: “What an asshole, am I right?”
Obviously it was a joke. And obviously, anyone who might be worried that it wasn’t a joke, could just look up what she said next and rest easy that Stone wasn’t actually calling Swift an asshole (even after she jokingly called Swift an asshole again). “I’ve known her for almost 20 years and I was very happy that she was there,” Stone said. “She was also nominated tonight, which was wonderful and, yes, what an asshole.”
Nonetheless, the quote inevitably sparked negative (or just plain stupid) reactions. In a new interview with Variety, Stone joked, “I definitely won’t make a joke like that again, because I’ve seen headlines that have really taken it out of context.”
Stone then apparently pointed to herself and said, “What drugs.” (To be clear, she was joking.)
With her Golden Globe for Poor Things in hand (along with a BAFTA), Stone has been busy doing the press tour ahead of the Oscars, where she is nominated for Best Actress and Best Picture (as a producer of Poor Things). While promoting the film, she also used her Q&A skills to try and get away with it. Danger! – and not the celebrity version.
“If you know you applied, you took the quiz, you went on the show having the brains to be on the show,” Stone told Stephen Colbert on a recent show. Last show interview. “Not that Fame peril! people don’t have the intelligence, because I’ve seen impressive candidates. However, I just want to know that I passed the test.
