Emma Corrin Discusses the Challenges Faced Since Coming Out as Queer and Nonbinary
Emma Corrin is sharing their experience of navigating public perception of their identity.
Since coming out publicly as queer in 2021, and later changing their pronouns to they/them on Instagram, the response from the public has been mixed.
“The backlash has been more intense than I expected,” Emma revealed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar published on May 22. “Despite the idea of progressiveness in society, there seems to be a regression in how individuals are perceived.”
Emma noted that fans often create expectations based on the characters they see on screen. “People follow me because of the roles I play,” Emma explained. “They have a certain image of me, and when they see the real me, they react negatively. I don’t understand why. Who is harmed by being genuine? Why is it controversial to be yourself?”
While facing challenges, the actor reflected on moments of validation, such as receiving positive feedback for their role as Orlando in Virginia Woolf‘s novel of the same name, alongside their work in projects like Lady Chatterly’s Lover and My Policeman in addition to portraying Princess Diana.
