Imtiaz Ali Rewrote Rockstar ‘From Memory’ After Losing Script: Filmmaker Recalls How Ranbir Kapoor Insisted on Being Part of It
Imtiaz Ali’s movie, Rockstar, was a breakthrough in Bollywood, propelling him to stardom as a filmmaker. The movie won awards and gained immense popularity, leading to a re-release in cinemas earlier this year due to high demand. Ranbir Kapoor’s performance as Jordan was exceptional, and it is lesser-known that Ali had approached the actor for another project.
In a conversation with Mid-Day, Imtiaz Ali recounted his plans to make Rockstar, which unfortunately fell through initially. However, discussions about the movie persisted within close circles, and years later, Ali revisited the project. At a screening, he coincidentally met Ranbir Kapoor, sparking their collaboration for the film.
Initially meeting Kapoor with a script for another film, Ali found that the actor’s interest in Rockstar was evident. Kapoor passionately narrated the storyline of the musical drama, convincing Ali of his suitability for the role. Impressed, Ali offered Kapoor the part, promising to provide him with the script.
However, Ali had misplaced the script and had to rewrite it from memory. The 2011 film also features Nargis Fakhri, Aditi Rao Hydari, and other talented actors. Imtiaz Ali’s recent project, Amar Singh Chamkila, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, released on Netflix on April 12, 2024. Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor is currently working on Ramayana with Nitesh Tiwari, alongside Sai Pallavi and Yash.
