What Denzel Washington Really Thought About Filming Gladiator II: Was It ‘Too Good A Time’?
Denzel Washington portrays Macrinus, the arms dealer and gladiator wrangler, in Gladiator II. His performance as the conniving and enigmatic character received much praise. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Washington was asked if he enjoyed playing Macrinus. “Everyone keeps saying that. They keep saying that,” he responded with a smile.
“Am I having too good a time? Is that what you’re telling me?” Washington added, chuckling. He expressed gratitude for being part of the Gladiator franchise, mentioning that it was a no-brainer decision to accept the role.
Washington praised director Ridley Scott for his talent and the compelling script of the film. When offered the role, he knew it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. The sequel to Gladiator will focus on a younger generation in the same world.
Playing a character who wears a dress required Washington to study and adapt to the costume. Despite some initial challenges, he embraced the role and learned to walk and move gracefully in the attire.
Gladiator II is set to release on November 15th.
