Director of Deadpool & Wolverine, Shares the ‘Dirty Line of Dialogue’ That Was Cut from the Final Film
Deadpool & Wolverine showcased Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson, also known as Merc With a Mouth, as one of the most foul-mouthed characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film included jokes about celebrities and controversial topics, such as Hugh Jackman’s divorce, Bennifer, and even Kevin Feige. Despite the bold choices in humor, none of the jokes caused any scandals.
Director, writer, and producer Shawn Levy mentioned that they had the freedom to be edgy with their jokes, but there was one joke that had to be removed from the final cut. Levy explained that the joke was about Hugh Jackman, which the actor took in good spirits, but it was ultimately dropped from the movie.
Levy did not disclose the specific joke that was cut, but he shared that it was replaced with a similarly risque line involving Pinocchio. This replacement was suggested by Ryan Reynolds himself, highlighting his audacious humor that mirrors his character, Deadpool.
Reynolds’ involvement in the creative process as a producer and writer infused the film with his distinctive humor. Levy collaborated with Reynolds on the script, bringing the character of Deadpool to life. With creative autonomy from Disney and Feige, they were able to shape the final product.
Despite initial concerns about creative freedom in the superhero genre, Levy found that Deadpool & Wolverine offered him the most creative autonomy he had experienced in his career. The movie, now showing in theaters, marks a significant milestone for Levy as a director.
