James Gunn Celebrates Anniversary of DC’s Monster Team, Creature Commandos, Before December Debut
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s vision of revitalizing DC Studios is on the verge of becoming a reality, starting with two highly anticipated projects—Creature Commandos for television and Gunn’s Superman movie. This DC revamp, featuring these exciting projects, will signal the start of several upcoming slates with new actors portraying different DC roles. Gunn recently commemorated the anniversary of the original Creature Commandos series in a new post on his social media.
James Gunn celebrates Creature Commandos anniversary
Creature Commandos holds significant importance as one of the flagship series of DC Studios, paving the way for a new era for the studio. The animated series has generated considerable buzz since its announcement following James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over the studio as co-CEOs.
Gunn took to his X account (formerly Twitter) to mark the anniversary of the iconic comic book Weird War Tales #93, which introduced Creature Commandos for the first time. In his post on X, Gunn acknowledged the creators J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, as well as cover artist Joe Kubert.
Gunn hinted that the original comic book would inspire the upcoming DC Studios’ Creature Commandos show premiering in December, promising a series that fans will adore as much as the creators. The debut of Creature Commandos on mainstream media, nearly 40 years after its inception, carries significance for DC’s fresh universe.
Gunn’s celebration of the misfit team serves as a prelude to the show’s launch on HBO and Max in December. While fans are already eager for the project, Gunn’s endorsement of the show adds to the excitement as he openly expressed his love for the animated series.
What can we expect from Creature Commandos?
The forthcoming animated series will offer a narrative distinct from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad film. Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis, will be in charge of the unconventional monsters. Gunn emphasized the series as a cornerstone of DC Studios’ legacy, playing a vital role in their storytelling vision.
By unifying DC’s films, TV shows, animations, and games under a cohesive vision, Gunn aims to create a consistent and engaging DC Universe. This integrated approach allows for diverse content that connects seamlessly across different platforms, maintaining consistency in characters, history, and actors.
The new series picks up immediately after the Peacemaker season one finale, where Amanda Waller faces ethical dilemmas and recruits a new group of misfits similar to the Suicide Squad. Gunn teased that Creature Commandos is unique as they are actual monsters, promising an exciting introduction to these characters.
With ties to The Peacemaker series, Creature Commandos offers a fresh take on DC’s morally complex characters. The star-studded cast, including Viola Davis, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Indira Varma, Frank Grillo, Zoë Chao, Anya Chalotra, Maria Bakalova, Steve Agee, and Sean Gunn, adds to the anticipation surrounding the show.
