Creative Arts Emmys Guest Actor Drama: Néstor Carbonell, Michaela Coel

Guest Actors Nominated for Creative Arts Emmys in Drama Category: Néstor Carbonell and Michaela Coel

Néstor Carbonell and Michaela Coel were named best guest actor and guest actress on Night 2 of the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday night. Carbonell was awarded for his role as Rodrigues on FX’s Shogun and Coel for portraying Bev on Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Best guest actress in a comedy Emmy nominee Jamie Lee Curtis presented the award to Carbonell, whose fellow nominees included Paul Dano (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video), Tracy Letts (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, HBO/Max), Jonathan Pryce (Slow Horses, Apple TV+) and John Turturro (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video). Carbonell began his acceptance speech by thanking his wife.

“I want to thank Shannon,” said Carbonell. “My wife is here. Shannon is an actress who worked for 25 years in this industry in film, and television and theater. And when our second son was born, she stepped away from it in favor of full-time motherhood so that I could proceed to what I love to do. So I share this with you, honey.”

Carbonell told The Hollywood Reporter in a previous interview what the role of Rodrigues has meant to him. “Being part of this amazing show, the whole experience was extraordinary, from the beginning all the way to the end. It’s not often as an actor that you get to play someone who’s quite far away from you in so many respects; physically, I had the opportunity to grow this nasty beard and gain some weight, and then learning a Castilian accent,” he shared. “Usually, when I work on a project, I end up hiring my own dialect coach because it’s not factored into the budget, but it was on Shogun. They truly spared no expense in terms of every detail.”

Coel, who wasn’t in attendance for the ceremony, was nominated for best guest actress alongside Claire Foy (The Crown, Netflix), Marcia Gay Harden (The Morning Show, Apple TV+), Sarah Paulson (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video) and Parker Posey (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video).
