Chappell Roan Confronts Photographer at MTV VMAs Red Carpet
Chappell Roan asserted herself at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards following a rude incident.
Roan, who made her debut as a performer during the awards show, appeared on the red carpet in a medieval-inspired outfit. In a video shared by Entertainment Tonight, a photographer appeared to tell her to “Shut the fuck up” after she turned away from the camera. The “Hot To Go” singer responded quickly, telling the photographer, “You shut the fuck up!” She then added, “Don’t! Not me, bitch!” Someone in the background cheered her on, saying, “Tell ’em, girl!”
When questioned about the incident by an Entertainment Tonight reporter, Roan explained, “It’s quite overwhelming and quite scary. I think for someone who gets … a lot of … anxiety around people yelling at you … the carpet is horrifying.”
Roan added, “And I need to—I yelled back. I yelled back! You don’t get to yell at me like that!”
Last month, the pop star set boundaries on social media after experiencing concerning behavior from individuals claiming to be her fans. “For the past 10 years, I’ve been relentlessly working on my project and it’s now reached a point where I need to establish boundaries. I want to be an artist for a very long time,” she shared in a seven-slide post on Instagram.
She went on, “I’ve been in too many nonconsensual physical and social interactions and I just need to lay it out and remind you, women don’t owe you anything. I chose this career path because I love music and art and honoring my inner child. I do not tolerate any form of harassment because of my chosen path, nor do I deserve it.”
In the caption, Roan emphasized, “If you see me as rude or ungrateful or my whole statement upsets you, that’s on you… you must introspect and ask yourself ‘why does this bother me so much? Why is a woman expressing her fears and boundaries so enraging?’”
