In a recent interview with Total Film, Tatum talked about the challenges he faced in preparing for this role, which was a departure from his usual characters. He explained, “Every character I play, I usually have some sort of love for or a connection to.”
While his previous roles in movies like 21 Jump Street or Fly Me To The Moon allowed him to develop attachments to his characters, playing Slater King was a unique experience for Tatum.
Tatum revealed that playing a psychopath required him to go to a dark mental space, which he prefers not to discuss. He mentioned, “He’s a psychopath.”
Comparing his experience as Slater King to his previous characters, Tatum found it hard to articulate the difference. His previous roles often had elements of tenderness or connection, but playing King demanded a deeper dive into a disturbing mental realm.
