Understanding Makima’s Devil Contract in Chainsaw Man

The world of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man is filled with many fearsome devils that essentially represent the various fears of humanity. Unlike typical villains or demons seen in other shonen anime and manga, the devils in Chainsaw Man have diverse appearances, personalities, and are perceived differently by humans. While most of these devils are based on concrete fears like animals or objects, some are rooted in abstract concepts, such as the Control Devil Makima.
How are Makima’s devil contracts different from other devils’?
The devil contracts in Chainsaw Man resemble the traditional concept of a Deal with the Devil. Typically, when a person forms a contract with a Devil, they must sacrifice something valuable in exchange for their powers. This differs from entities like Denji and Pochita, who coexist harmoniously within one body.
Although devils may demand sacrifices in their contracts, they uphold their end of the deal with honor. This contrasts with Makima, who manipulates humans using her Control Devil powers to impose unfair contracts that grant her unilateral power over them. Like a puppet master, Makima controls individuals, forces them into contracts, and compels them to fight on her behalf, making her a despicable and dishonorable character.
Makima’s contracts render her nearly invincible due to an agreement with the Prime Minister of Japan. This pact redistributes any harm inflicted upon Makima among the citizens of Japan, allowing her to withstand lethal attacks while others suffer in her place.
Makima’s controlling nature is evident in her contracts
Makima’s manipulative and controlling tendencies are apparent in the contracts she ensnares unsuspecting individuals in. Her deceptive appearance as a member of the Public Safety Commission conceals her true nature, enabling her to deceive others easily. Makima’s deceitful actions, such as exploiting Denji’s vulnerabilities and betraying his trust, showcase her treacherous character.
Makima is self-aware of her dishonest and manipulative behavior, prioritizing her own safety and dominance over others. She exerts control over those she deems inferior, manipulating them to bend to her will. Her contracts and manipulative tactics solidify her identity as the ominous Control Devil, underscoring the genuine fear of being controlled by others.
