Céline Dion Shares Health Update on Struggle with Stiff-Person Syndrome
Dion revealed that she had been diagnosed with a “very rare” progressive neurological disorder known as stiff-person syndrome, likely unfamiliar to most people.
“As you know, I’ve always been transparent,” she stated in an Instagram video. “While I wasn’t ready to share earlier, I am now. I’ve been grappling with health issues for quite some time, and it’s been challenging for me to confront these difficulties and discuss my struggles.”
Dion elaborated that she experienced muscle spasms impacting “every aspect” of her daily life, causing difficulties in walking at times, ultimately leading to the heartbreaking realization that returning to her touring plans was no longer feasible.
“I am diligently working with my sports medicine therapist every day to regain my strength and performance capability,” Dion shared. “Nevertheless, I must acknowledge that it has been an uphill battle.”
As per the National Institutes of Health, symptoms of stiff-person syndrome include stiffness in muscles across the torso, arms, and legs, heightened sensitivity to noise, touch, and emotional distress, all potentially triggering muscle spasms.
