Original Brat Pack: Almost 40 Years Later, a Reunion
McCarthy portrayed Georgetown University grad Kevin in St. Elmo’s Fire, and portrayed the rich, popular high school senior Blane who falls for outcast Andie in Pretty in Pink.
Following these roles, he took on the character of a window dresser whose muse comes to life in Mannequin, and a disaffected college student in Less Than Zero (which also featured Robert Downey Jr. and Pretty in Pink co-star James Spader). However, Weekend at Bernie‘s is considered his most enduring film.
McCarthy’s movie highlights after the 1980s included The Joy Luck Club and Mulholland Falls. He also starred in several short-lived TV shows such as Lipstick Jungle. In addition to his work in theater, he has become a busy director, working on series such as Gossip Girl, Orange Is the New Black, The Blacklist, The Sinner and Good Girls.
It is also interesting to note that he is an award-winning travel writer and the author of a YA novel, Just Fly Away. His first marriage to college sweetheart Carol Schneider resulted in a son, while his current wife Dolores Rice has given him a daughter.
